What is steampunk?
Steampunk is a type of fantasy that mixes alternate history with science fiction.
Steampunk stories are set in a location where steam power has been developed, usually 19th century Victorian Britain, except where modern-day technologies have also been invented. These include flying machines or mechanical computers. Steampunk is also influenced by 19th century science fiction writers such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells
As steampunk stories have become more prominent a number of variations have been explored. Many of these use a power source other than steam as the main technology, such as Clockpunk or Dieselpunk. But the Victorian era remains a popular choice, and other fantastical elements are sometimes blended in. These include magic and mythological creatures (vampires, werewolves).
Naturally you can read a lot more about steampunk on the wikipedia page.
