Command (Ship Manifest)
The command of the ship is in the hands of the Captain, who is supported by his First Mate.
Captain The captain is the person in ultimate command of the vessel. The captain has authority over the entire crew and is also responsible for their safety. First Mate The First Mate is second-in-command of the ship. He/She assists the Captain in his duties and needs to be ready to take command at all times should the something happen to the Captain. Pirates The bad pirates. No, the really, really bad pirates. -
Navigation (Ship Manifest)
The navigator works together with the helmsman and the lookout to get the ship from A to B.
Navigator The Navigator charts the path of the ship and provides reports to the captain and mate. Helmsman The Helmsman steers the ship. While anyone could take the wheel, Helmsmen are chosen based on their steering skills and experience. Lookout The Lookout's job is to be aware of oncoming dangers, and to report when land or ships are in sight. The Lookout also provides weather forecasts. Sky Reader An astro-navigator, a weather forecaster and an astrologer combined, who predicts the weather and the success of a journey based on a combinaton of scientific evidence and spiritual intuition. -
Ship Maintanance (Ship Manifest)
Keeping the ship in good working order, the shipwright and engineers work together.
Shipwright The Shipwright is responsible for the overall maintenance of the ship. Chief Engineer The Chief Engineer oversees the operation of the coal engines. Engineer The Engineer assists the operation of the coal engines. Handyman The man or woman responsible for doing minor repairs on the ship and providing assistance to the engineers and the shipwright. Apprentice Engineer An assistant to the engineers, who learns by being bossed around to do small but important tasks, that the engineers don't have time for. -
Naval Warfare (Ship Manifest)
A pirate ship needs to be able to attack and defend!
Tactician The Tactician is a specialist in naval warfare, who advises the Captain on which courses of action to take before and during a battle. Master Gunner The Master Gunner oversees the gun deck(s), making sure that the ship is ready for battle. During a battle the Master Gunner will be organising the men operating the cannons. Gunner The gunners are under the direct command of the Master Gunner. War Dog Pack Leader The Pack Leader commands the War Dogs, the Steamhawke's viscious attack unit. They lead the direct attack when boarding ships or attack on land, and falls directly under the Captain's, First Mate's and Tactician's command. War Dog The War Dogs are the viscious attack unit of the Steamhawke. They are responsible for attacks on boarded ships, as well as attacks on land. When not fighting they are either training or assisting with the everyday tasks on board the ship. War Dog Combat Engineer The Combat Engineer is a War Dog who produces improvised gadgetry to give the crew a technological advantage in combat. These men and women are expected to be as tough as they are quick witted. -
The Workforce (Ship Manifest)
The hands-on workmen, such as the sailors, to do the labour aboard.
Boatswain The Boatswain manages the sailors and generally relays orders back and forth between ship departments. He ensures the physical welfare of the crew. Quartermaster The ship's Quartermaster is responsible for ship preparations, the loading and unloading of the ship, and generally being able to report on the readiness of the ship to set sail. Deckhand Deckhands are crewmembers who operate the ship, perform the docking procedures, load and unload cargo, and generally spend their time with the day-to-day business of the ship. They can be called upon to assist in defence and offence as well. Cabin Boy/Girl Want to be a pirate when you grow up? Better start by running and back with messages, assisting the specialists who didn't ask for your help, and generally being kicked around as a source of stress relief for the crew. Swabbie Nobody keeps those decks clean like the Swabbie does. Stowaway What's this? Hiding on board the ship? Think you can get fre passage that way? You can try! -
Civilians (Ship Manifest)
These helpful members of the crew are not necessarily bound by the chain of command.
Cook The Cook keeps the bellies of the crew full. The importance of a well-fed crew is not to be underestimated. Kitchen boy/girl The kitchen boy or girl assists the cook and they help serve the food, cleaning dishes and doing chores for the cook. Doctor The ship's Doctor keeps the crew in good condition. A few shots of medicinal rum and a piece of rope between your teeth and then the doctor is ready to operate. Musician A musician keeps the crew entertained on long dark evenings, between ports. Ship's Pet This can be any animal. Passenger Sometimes people need to go from A to B. Sometimes they never leave the ship... -
