No, seems pretty clear a story about pirates is going to be violent and so on

Author Topic: Do we need a rating?

Topic Original "No modification"
We've only ever once had someone register and then reject the site after application based on the site's theme and posts, but do you think we need to more explicitely state a rating?

Just age, or theme and subject matter?

And do you think our age policy is sufficient?

Just checking what thoughts and opinions are out there.

In theory, I would think that people ought to know that a story about pirates is going to be violent, etc.

In practice, however...in the RP world, better safe than sorry, I'd say.

Yes, that is whwre this came from. There are too many sensitive souls in the rp world.

It's what I would like to steer away from though. So on the one hand, I think givinc a clear indication of rating and theme would stop people from being horrified at what we write and how we write. On the other hand, I would love to find a way to promote Steamhawke as a non-rp writing site, more.

Maybe a rating would be a good first step though.

Yeah, would definitely say that Steamhawke is more of a webserial that happens to be written collaboratively than it is an RPG. But that's totally off topic, so going away now.

Following your tangent, I prefer "collaborative writing project" and we're gonna stick something like that on the front page some time.

I would propose to use a system like the European PEGI rating, which has a clear age rating (16+ in our case) and icons depicting what people can encounter in the story.

Something like an icon for violence, bad/mature language or swearing, sex (though we're not even that explicit, it happens), and scary stuff (fear).

Came up with the following images:

That covers it, I think. Did I miss anything though?
