General Announcements / Mission statement
« on: October 15, 2013, 09:38:31 PM »
As I write this, Steamhawke's been going on for two years and we've had a fantastic time writing with our members.  We're still picking up new members, so I'm writing this to clarify our mission statement.

Feel free to comment!

You can use this thread for general discussion for Chapter 9: Steam City.

General Chat / Registered partnership
« on: September 07, 2013, 07:52:22 PM »
A couple of weeks from now Daenelia and I will be in a Registered Partnership.  In the Netherlands this is legally equivalent to marriage, so I can kind of start calling her my wife.

It's pretty funny, because these kind of civil partnerships were originally created to provide legal recognition of same-sex relationships, but then quickly afterwards the Dutch passed a law to equalise all kinds of legal relationships for everyone.  You can't stop same-sex couples marrying.  But at the same time, you can't stop opposite-sex couples from entering a registered partnership.

I guess we're just gay for each other.

General Chat / The games we play
« on: September 07, 2013, 04:51:15 PM »
What games do we play?

I'll start.

Diablo 3
I started playing Diablo 3 again about a year after I'd stopped.  The game is simplistic, repetitive, and requires no brain power at all.  Perfect.  It's the ideal game for me to relax to.  I can play Diablo 3 while listening to podcasts / TV and have the perfect relaxing experience.  I can play from muscle memory alone and think through difficult problems I'm having at work or put together Steamhawke stories in my head.

Guild Wars 2
The best MMO Dae and I have played since LOTRO - it's a beautiful game and can be a lot of fun.  Subscription free - so the experience has paid for itself many times over.  I'm happy to have had so many great memories playing this with Dae. This is a game of endless lore if that's what you're interested in.

One of the most immersive games I have played in the past five years.  Getting back into it now that I have a new PC that can really show the game at its most beauty.  The open world means that I am playing my own story, it even feels like my character has her own motivations.

General Chat / I've given birth to a new computer
« on: August 25, 2013, 12:47:59 PM »
Until a couple of years ago I had never built my own computer.  I'm a different kind of nerd.  But as we move into a world dominated by smartphones and tablets, where the home computer market is stagnating, I can stand proud and say "I gave birth to a computer!"

I know full well that home PC assembly is much more straightforward now than it used to be, but for most people it's rocket science.  At work, I'm the biggest nerd in the office, and when I told people I would be putting together a computer for the second time this weekend I got either blank stares or raised eyebrows.

The first time, it was much more difficult for Dae and me to build our computers.  We had plenty of background knowledge between us, but no real experience.  But this time I was ready for it.

I'd done all my research on the latest advances, compatibility, the best value for money components.  It's a LOT cheaper to buy the parts separately compared to buying a ready built machine.   It's a LOT more satsifying to know how it all fits together.  And it's a LOT cooler than any PC I could buy in a shop, because it's all mine.

This Chapter / Chapter 7: Going West
« on: March 23, 2013, 11:01:00 PM »
The Steamhawke is travelling across the Atlantic Sky in the direction of the Old West.

What will happen aboard the ship during the long journey?

What will the Steamhawke encounter along the way?

We really want your story ideas.

Poop Deck / Writing for multiple characters
« on: March 10, 2013, 08:21:12 PM »
We're often asked questions like "can I have another character?", so I've made this thread to explain our standard answer.

You can write about any character you want, in any situation you want, as long as it continues the story.

The quickest way to write about new characters is... just to do it!  You can write about characters that don't have a biography yet.  We do sometimes have "Guest" characters that have biographies because they are more central to the story, but there are also characters that live in the location that Steamhawke is visiting that may never be mentioned again - these tend not to have biographies.  (A wiki page is welcome)

If you want to add a new recurring character with a biography (NPC) then lets discuss your ideas together.  If you are really serious about concentrating your efforts on this character,  we can swap your "primary"character to the new one and change your original to an NPC.

This is the story of the Steamhawke and its pirates, so it's important that we don't stray too far away from that.  Even when we have guest characters, the story of the chapter still revolves around the crew.  There shouldn't be any ongoing drama elsewhere that the Steamhawke isn't going to run into.

General Chat / Using the nova system
« on: March 13, 2012, 08:16:18 PM »
Let us know if you have any questions about using the Nova system for roleplaying.
It can be intimidating if you haven't figured out how to properly use it, but once you have seen the light youll agree it's the best thing ever.

You will agree.

General Chat / Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 is the game you should play if you hate MMOs, and the game you should play if you love MMOs.

This Chapter / What is going on?
« on: March 11, 2012, 06:40:41 PM »
This is a rolling summary of events, so that anybody new to Steamhawke can catch up with the story.

In the 19th century the nations of Terra are undergoing a second industrial revolution. Steam power is now so advanced that ships can rise from the surface of the ocean. These "sky ships" come in all shapes and sizes, and mankind uses them for trade, for luxury, and for war.

Always getting themselves into trouble are the Sky Pirates. Whether seen as deceitful villains, or noble romantics, these pirates make names for themselves by plundering other vessels and exploring the world in search of treasure.

Aboard one such pirate ship, the Sky Tiger, a mutiny went horribly wrong.  The helmswoman Daenelia Bradley wrongly believed that the first mate Jack Stallion was in agreement with the mutiny, and when the captain had been murdered, Jack had Daenelia thrown off the ship.

She survived, and in the next twelve years had forged a career of her own as a pirate captain.  From one of her contacts Daenelia purchased a treasure map, but before she could seek out the lost treasure of Quazlatah she needed to find a new crew for her ship, the Steamhawke.

Captain Daenelia docked at the neutral island of Seaport and found the crew she needed.  Following some of the clues on the treasure map, she took off towards the nation of Elladia, but during the journey she came to realise that half of the map was missing.  The other half was in the possession of Captain Jack Stallion, who was doing his best to track down Daenelia and take the other part of the map for himself.

Daenelia and the crew of the Steamhawke had a short but eventful stay on the Elladian island of Mypos.  They managed to anger the local militia and a number of different shadowy organisations who had been tracking down different members of the crew.

Fortunately they managed to gather enough clues as to the location of the treasure, and the Steamhawke flew into a mysterious alchemical fog.  The trek ended in disappointment, as the crew discovered strong evidence that the treasure was not hidden in the fog.

Back in the open skies, Captain Jack Stallion of the Sky Tiger was waiting for the Steamhawke.  The crew started a fight for their lives...

There is a more in-depth summary in the steamhawke wiki
