General Chat / Painting miniatures
« on: August 03, 2014, 09:40:56 AM »
Yep, that's what I have been spending some time on rather than writing for Steamhawke. Sorry.

I have done some pixel art work of course, so doesnt it make perfect sense to enjoy painting miniatures for board games? We have been playing Descent (again, it took away time from Steamhawke), and there are this incredibly detailed miniature 'pawns' or play pieces. They are a joy to paint. I use this eensyweensie tiny brush, and NO MAGNIFYING GLASS, as that distorts where I think the brush is going to land...

At 40+ my eyesight is not as good as when I was 6, but my close-up eyesight was always freaksishly good at that age. And my eyesight has improved since I started painting! Training, and all that.

Anyway, as soon as Five is up and about, I will ask if he can put some of the pics he took of the minis online, so I can link to them :)

General Announcements / Getting back in the swing of things
« on: August 03, 2014, 09:35:24 AM »
Summer is in full swing, we're doing a bit of a cleanup.

We're no longer advertising on regular RPG directories, as we feel this is not delivering new members who stick around or who take time to understand the differences in the way we tell stories.

So, new members will be few, but that just means we will be focusing on characters that are established well enough for us all to write for.

There will be some changes, but those changes will be more about relaxing rather than impossing new strict rules (which goes against our wishes for the site anyway. We never wanted to admin like that...)

Anyway. So now you know.

General Chat / Breakfast, lunch or dinner?
« on: May 19, 2014, 12:21:06 PM »
As it is lunch time and I am sitting at my desk to eat my breadrolls with cheese, I wonder what lunch for you is like...

I really like lunch. I like how it can be a hot or a cold meal, it 'breaks the day in half' and it is a great meal to splash out on and make it special. Cheese rolls notwithstanding.

Breakfast is my least favourite meal. It's too early to eat, I'd rather spend it sleeping. But if I can make it brunch, I am happy.

Actually, I also find dinner boring, the evening meal. You have to come up with something to eat, it involves cooking at the end of the day which inevitably leads to cleaning pans.

Then there is the naming of the meal! 'Tea' up north in the UK is the evening meal, and not, as some assume, the 'high tea' variant with cakes and tiny sandwiches. They also call lunch dinner, which can lead to some confusion...

And do you have your warm meal of the day around noon or in the evening?

All good questions!

Alternate Steamhawke / Not a pirate
« on: May 13, 2014, 11:52:35 AM »
Daenelia stretched her arms above her head, as she lay in the hotel bed with a smile on her face. Time away from the shop, in a different country, and just looking at new things to bring back. She thought about the shop, of course, but between her mother and her brother it was in good hands.

A discreet knock on the door was her wake up call. "Miss Bradley?" It was the kitling from the hotel desk, the one who dragged her suitcase up. He was an orange furred tom, and quite clever for a kitling. Strong and tall, too. He only stumbled when a black girl kitling passed them on the stairs. She had ignored him completely, but he had stared after her as if she was a goddess on earth.

"I'll be right out, thank you!" Daenelia yelled through the closed door. The kitling pushed his ears back and forth and shrugged, as he left to go downstairs again.

Harling Pass was an unlikely town to find treasures, Daenelia mused as she quickly washed and got dressed. It had plenty of shops, though, and places to be entertained. Must be for all the travelers passing through. It had been one of those travelers who had left something valuable behind. And Daenelia's source had gotten hold of it for her. If he was right, it would be a prize to bring back to Britannia. The elite there were always willing to pay for unusual items.

When she was done, she calmly walked down to the breakfast room. She was served by the little black furred kitling, who seemed much more friendly than at first. Daenelia had just finished her last bite when someone walking into the breakfast room caught her eye. She sighed a bored sigh. Colton had bought a cowboy outfit. Just like when they were kids, he loved dressing up. His hat looked to big for him, the duster was hanging off his shoulders in an awkward way and he seemed to have trouble walking in those boots with spurs.

Her source, because that was what Colton was to her, tried to swagger over but stumbled midway. He only just caught himself on the back of the chair across from her. "Morning, ma'am," he drawled, in what he thought sounded like a tough cowboy voice.

About the only thing that fitted was his unshaven face and his darker skin. "Do you have it?" Daenelia sounded excited as she was already focussing on the item Colton had promised her. He nodded with a grin and quickly sat down, as he placed a brown paper packaged almost on het breakfast plate.

"Open it!" He said it in a happy voice, because he was sure 'Nelia would be impressed, this time.

She beamed at him and tore the paper off. A statuette was revealed. It was shiny, bright, depicting a woman. She looked at the base, felt the texture of the material and even sniffed it.

She sighed. "It's fake, Colton." His face fell.

"What? No!" He grabbed the statuette. "They said it was real! They had a document and everything!" He rummaged in his bag.

"Oh, they told you it was real? Oh, well, then it MUST be," Daenelia sneered. She pushed the statuette away. "Got anything else, Dolton?"

Colton cringed at the nickname. "Please don't call me that," he said, as he stopped searching his bag. "Look, there are other things here." He had been surprised to see quality workmanship machines and toys. Plenty of things to bring back.

Daenelia scowled. "Here? In Nowhere Town? Nothing like what you promised me," she said with a pout.

He started to put the statuette back in his bag, but Daenelia touched his hand to stop him. "You know," she said with a sly smile, "no on in Britannia would know it wasn't real." She winked at him.  A slow smile crept on Colton's face. "Ohhh," he said, as he let Daenelia take the statuette.

"So, what else?" She got up and threw a woollen shawl over her shoulders. Colton started rambling on about what he had found, as they exited the hotel.

"Oh," he said, as they walked down the main street. "Bianca wanted to invite you over for dinner tonight." He blushed as he mentioned his wife. Somehow it felt strange to see his childhood crush and his wife together in the same room. Even stranger when they got along so well. But Bianca said she saw 'Nelia as the sister she never had. And 'Nelia enjoyed telling Bianca all the embarrasing stories of them growing up together. It should have been embarrasing, but Colton actually found himself enjoying their banter.

"Yes!" Daenelia said loudly. "I am dying to tell her about that time we played train robbers. I just remembered that the other night when I heard some people mention the train from Columbus City."

Colton smiles. "Okay then," he said. "First, let's go to the hardware store. They have something you will love."

'Nelia nestled her hand on his arm, pressing close. "I can't wait," she said. Colton wasn't sure whether she meant to see the gadget, or to tell his wife the embarrasing stories...

In several posts I am in, and some that have not been started, I am waiting on other people to post, or at least indicate that they're satisfied to post the post as is.

I am very much inclined to just post when I think it is finished.

What do you do?

General Chat / Games of the Board Kind
« on: May 08, 2014, 11:15:07 AM »
So we all played monopoly, risk and snakes and ladders (well, actually, I didnt: it is not a staple Dutch game. We play 'Ganzenbord' - Goose Board - which sends you back on the board's tiles if you fall into the well or instance.)

But what are the more 'exotic' games you played?

Reason I open this topic is because we just got hold of Descent (2nd edition) and I havent actually played it yet, but it looks delicicious.

We have played games like Carcasonne, Civilisation the board game, the hidden city (where you get covered in sand in the desert). Still, we like new games, so share yours.

Poop Deck / What makes the pirates evil?
« on: May 05, 2014, 10:18:37 AM »
Just a random topic on our ideas about evil and how we present it in the story.

There are no storybook evil characters who are just evil for the sake of being evil. As for everyone, choices in life lead to different outcomes and turns, which make it easier for one character to stay on the straight and narrow more, and makes it almost unavoidable for a character to make the wrong decision time after time.

I don't see Daenelia as evil. She is an opportunist, and at the moment it is opportune to do things that are not exactly legal and lawful. The quickest results for the least amount of energy. Is she good? No, not really. She is quite selfish and has very little empathic ability, and what she does think about other's feelings and thoughts are only to her own benefit. That doesn't make her evil either. Just narrow-minded. A lot could be explained from her havin to fend for herself at an early age, but she probably alway was a bit selfish and looking out for number one.

At the same time, she thinks she is a caring person, who is fair and honest to her crew. Her own self-image is distorted.

So how do you think your character does in terms of good and evil?

General Chat / Concert tickets and frustration
« on: May 05, 2014, 10:03:24 AM »
Okay, so Prince is performing in Holland, quite close by where we live for a change (no travel to Rotterdam!) and I would really really like to see him once more before he actually starts to age (man does not age. Does. Not. Age.).

But. Ticket sales start on a workday at noon, exclusively online. I can't even take my sleeping bag and lie waiting for a ticket shop to open (I did last time... well, my aunt did). Now there are all these shady, or 'corrupt' and 'evil', companies that buy up tickets in bulk before actual people can buy them. Just so they can sell them on at a higher price. Yes, this is illegal. No, this doesnt stop them.

I strongly want to believe in karma, because people working for these jerks will get their comeuppance, and as for the jerks themselves: I hope their house burns down.

Anyway. What do you think my chances are of still getting tickets when I get home?

General Chat / Books?
« on: April 03, 2014, 09:23:41 AM »
Anyone read anything good lately?

And do you prefer real books or e-books?

I am still a proper paper book person. I have had some e-books on a tablet but can't be bothered to read them. I need to feel the book, turn the pages, smell the paper.

We just finished watching (re-watching) 'Are you being served' and are now picking up MASH again.

Anything new we should consider watchig?

This Chapter / Chapter 10: Brakes on a Train
« on: March 17, 2014, 11:13:41 AM »
The official topic has been opened!

The first two posts give an indication of the setting, the crew sticks together in the Peacock's carriage but has free range of the train IF they can pass as normal passengers.

However, they are pirates, they will probably mess that one up. Just remember there are military men aboard, in the form of the rail marshals, who can and will respond to any disturbance of the peace.

... of course, there is the matter of the passenger that was shot when the pirates entered the train in the last post of the last chapter.

Help, Questions, Feedback / Re-arranged the forum
« on: March 04, 2014, 11:23:26 AM »
I merged some boards and moved some topics. Since we're a small group, with no heavy use of the forum, I wanted to make it easier to use.

Should be a lot clearer now. But if not: let me know!

Press Gang / Shanen wants his watch back.
« on: March 03, 2014, 01:27:29 PM »
When or IF we get on the train (we just don't know how yet...) Shanen would like his watch back. Ana stole it, remember?

Now, Ana seems like a resourceful woman. What is she ended up on the train? And what if Shanen sees her and keeps losing her? The train is big, after all.

Any takers to picking this up with Shanen en me?

2. What food takes you back to your childhood?
3. When did you last have a proper bath?
4. When did you first set sail in the skies?
5. How much money do you have?
6. How many times have you killed?
7. When's the last time you had a good laugh?
8. Who was your first love?
9. Are you a lover or a fighter?
10. Do you play a musical instrument?

(Anyone want to add 10 questions themselves, that's great. We can compile a list of questions!)
